The last note i sent to this forum was about "Got You On My
Mind" and it got censored, which infurtiated me so that I vowed not to write again. However, the most extraordinary coincedence just occurred and i wanted to share it with Madeleine's fans. My husband and i took a "Jazz vacation" last week, and we visited New Orleans for the first time. Wow! What an astonishing place. Bourbon street is a horror (stay away!), but Frenchman street and the less touristic venues are wonderful and the music was as delicious as the food.. On our last night we went to a totally shabby bar called "Donna's", right across the boulevard from Louis Armstrong park. We were told that some of the best musicians in town played there casually on Sunday nights, and we were not disappointed. The leader was Shannon Powell on drums, the most joyful drummer I've ever heard!, and the pianist was Larry who played phenomenally on a dreadful little piano. There were also a verry strong bass player and a saxophone man who was at the highest level. A trumpet player (who I was told is very famous) named Kermit something sang a song, which was a joy, and then this tall, curly haired fellow walked over to the drumer and whispered something to Shannon and Shannon pointed him to the mic onstage. Well when he took out his harmonica I knew it was William Galison, who I hadn't seen since I saw him with Madeleine at the Tin Angel. He proceeded to blow the place down; I mean the musiciaans were staring at eachother in amazement and the audience (about twelve people) were flabergasted. I must say, i would not have known from his work with Madeleine what William is capable of. "Got You On My Mind" doesn't show it either. He played seceral tunes and when he was done, I introduced myself. I asked about Madeleine and he very graciously told me that he and she had parted on uncomfortable terms, but that he was happy for her success. What hurt him the most he said was that Madeleine has been telling the press that she didn't play or record for eight years, when in fact she had played many gigs with him and recorded ":Got You On my Mind". I can vouch for that- i saw them together at the Tin Angel. He also gave me a new version of their CD, with some additional songs and a different cover. (prefer the original cover, with the photo of Madeleine and William touching noses). I'll report when i get a chance to hear it. I had the feeling that there was a lot he was not telling me out of respect for Madelene's privacy. He said there was a chance he would be performing at the Jazz festival next month, (where Madeleiine will be playing too). Personally, I hope they get together again, the show at the Tin Angel was magical. In any case, that was the highlight of our jazz tour. Thouught the fanclub might find that interesting! Judith |
