I've been catching up on the forum and offer my latest thoughts. Keep in mind that I am a HUGE Madi fan and listen to her music on my iPod and on my oomputer constantly.
1) If you haven't gone to NPR site to hear the "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Orleans" music mentioned in the previous post, do it now. It's very enjoyable. 2) I heard Madi at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston this summer. It's a shame she chose Martha Wainwright to open for her. It was painful to sit through thst waiting for Madi to appear. I enjoyed the Madi performance. At the same time I must say that her stage presence is pretty painful - it's like she doesn't really want to be there. And her singing is not nearly as enjoyable and wonderful as on her CD's (and Berklee is normally a perfect place to listen to music). She did do a curtain call duet with Martha that made Martha almost acceptable. 3) The whole dispute with William Galison is so much a shame. Their album together (whether or not she chooses to accept that it exists) is simply beautiful. They are both gifted musicians and together they sound quite sublime. That their relationship has degenerated into lawsuits is too bad for both of them. I'd love to hear more of them together but that will never happen, I fear. 4) If you like Madi, give Sasha Dobson a try. Very different but very good jazz vocalist. You can hear snippets at sashadobson.com. Unfortunately she's not on iTunes store, but her two mainstream albums are available at Amazon and on eBay. (The Darkling Thrush is also available at CDBaby web site where I buy much of my music because the artists get a bigger cut of the sale. There are lots of good young aspiring jazz vocalists with CD's on the site. And many (but not all) of the CD's which normally sell for $9-$15 are $5 each if you buy 3 or more from the "$5 special list".) And that sums up my current thoughts. Later. PS (edit): There are other Madi songs available for purchase that she recorded with The Great Wandering Jazz and Blues Band, the group she busked with in Paris and who independently sell the CD's. They have several CD's available and Madi sings vocals on three of them. The songs are all great. Some are repeated on more than one CD, but if you like Madi singing, then you have to have these CD's. It took a long time for delivery as the band travels a lot, but tbey were worth waiting for. They also have a new video DVD that includes footage of Madi learning & singing with the Band. It's all at http://www.lostwandering.com. All quite essential for the true Madi fan.
